Need an excuse to visit the Gold Coast this spring? Well, if the glorious beaches aren’t enough, we’ve got 5 things that you should be looking forward to this spring – perfect for families with kids.

From SWELL Sculpture Festival to FREE whale watching, the Gold Coast is looking good if you’re hoping to escape this spring for some well-deserved sun, sand and sea.

But enough of the chat – here are the five free family-friendly things to do this spring 2021 on the Gold Coast.

SWELL Sculpture Festival

It’s not too late to make plans for SWELL Sculpture Festival 2021. This large-scale sculpture exhibition on Currumbin Beach is completely free to check out! And, honestly, it’s a sight like no other.

Come by to marvel at small and large sculptures made by the hands of international, national and local artists. There are also workshops, artist talks, guided walks and more to get involved in. Sound good? Don’t miss it from September 10 to September 19.

Spring School Holiday

Of course, the spring school holiday is right around the corner and it’s simply the perfect excuse to head to the Gold Coast with the kids. What to do? Family bonding on the beach, a day out at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, kayaking in Currumbin Creek, picnics in Burleigh Head National Park – the list is, well, endless.

So… don’t keep the kids at home! The school holiday lasts two whole weeks and there isn’t a better way to spend it than on the beach with a few memorable days out on the side.

Coolangatta Gold

What’s that? Another free event? That’s right – the Coolangatta Gold is back to bring Coolangatta Beach to life for one whole weekend.

The Coolangatta Gold is an iconic triathlon event that comprises 42km of skiing, running, swimming and paddleboarding. Whew! But don’t fret if you’re not the active type – the action is free to spectate from the beachside and it comes with an exciting atmosphere and lots to take in.

Get ready as it takes place on October 16 and October 17.

Beach 5s Rugby Festival Gold Coast

Also free to spectate! Coming to Greenmount Beach, Beach 5s Rugby Festival is a two-day tournament that will pull in Australia’s best beach rugby teams for nothing but head-to-head, fast-paced, five-a-side beach rugby.

If you’re yet to watch beach rugby, you’re not going to want to miss this. Cheer on your favourite team (or teams) and soak up the atmosphere on October 30 and October 31.

Whale Watching Gold Coast

Now is the time. It’s the whale-watching season on the Gold Coast and if you’ve always wanted to see the migrating humpbacks then you’ve got to head over this spring.

What’s your budget? You can book a whale watching tour for a guaranteed up-close sighting OR you can catch a glimpse of the whales for free by just heading to one of the Gold Coast’s popular lookouts. And these are Tumgun Lookout, Burleigh Hill, Point Danger, SkyPoint and The Spit Main Beach. Just don’t forget your binoculars!
